The Tmt.Kannammal Educational Trust was established in 1985 with the goal of effecting positive change and progress through education. Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College was launched shortly thereafter, and in 1988, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was founded. In 1991, Thai Moogambigai Dental College was established. In 2003, both colleges were granted Deemed University status and became known as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, following orders from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi.
